In the fifth century, constant civil war scars western China. To escape death, Ti, a young scout, jumps through a crevice in the Zu mountains where he meets and becomes the apprentice of Ting Yin, a spiritual man with great fighting powers. They encounter a monk, Hsiao Yu, also a great fighter and a good man, but unfriendly to Ting. Because Ting and Hsiao can't work together, it falls to Ti to team with Hsiao's acolyte Yi Chen: they have 49 days to travel far to claim two swords that are the only weapons that can defeat the Blood Demon, who has decided the wreak havoc on the world. They get help from Long Brows, Ting falls in love with a countess, and civil war still rages. A college student (Yuen Biao) at a university in Canada is a fencing champion and when he has an accident one day, he "dreams" of being transported to ancient China and enters a conflict on Zu, the Magic Mountain. At the end of the story, he regains consciousness (this is in the longer English international version). The first and shorter version is about a warrior (Yuen Biao) who has become disillusioned with the constant civil wars in China and goes to the Magic Mountain. There he encounters ghosts and devils, and also good masters and their disciples who are out to stop the Blood Monster and his demons from destroying the world. This movie has it all: flashing blades, crispy punchlines, whirling monstrosities, fast paced-combat, incredible heroes and incredibly foxy heroines; it also has chaotic plot diversions, incoherent dialogues, some of the crappiest special effects to date (a great Chaos beast is actually a very recognisable red rug with metal plates attached), random explosions, more than one character that just vanish inexplicably, more than one character that learn to fly and save the world. It is a wonderful, frantic vision from a children's dream, where ordinary things come alive and threaten to eat us, where any component of the game can be immediately dismissed (preferably with a boom) in favour of whatever has just caught our attention.<br/><br/>If you like stories of swordsman army drop-outs who walk up the mountain with mentors who fight evildoers who bring up the great chaos beast which grows a double of the mentor that kills the mentor who gives his powers to his student who meets more swordsmen who join him to learn to fly up above the mountain to join the magic swords to banish the evil, this is your movie. Oh, I forgot about the temple where they tried to heal the master who got ill but the queen failed who got encased in ice when everything exploded… sort of. If you are appaled by an idea that a movie with this plot (not one part of it did I make up) could actually be made a have a cult following, then, well, you'd better not watch it. The chances of you enjoying it are truly minute. This is my favourite movie of all time. This film has it all, magic, adventure and heroes. This film is full of visually stunning special effects, lovable characters, a world full of imagination, a truly classic story to go with it and a larger than life cast. Yes, films do not get any better than this. The story is about a soldier called Ti Ming-chi, who wants to end all war, so he seeks to become the apprentice of a mysterious swordsman called Ting Ying. We also meet more heroes and other strange characters on the road. All of a sudden, demons from the nether realm see their chance to take over the mortal world. However, the most notorious of all demons, the blood demon is about to be resurrected and can be destroyed, but only by two swords when united. The heroes of the film seek these swords, but many obstacles wait. In the on-going battle between good and evil, there are epic battles with magic and warriors that fly though the air. This film influenced classics such as Big Trouble in Little China and other films like Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, but this remains the definitive fantasy film, that everyone must own.
